Accessories

We offer accessories for all our power supplies. Depending on the type of power supply we offer connectors, wall brackets and even software for our digitally programmable power supplies.

Article number (german: Artikelnummer)

Article numbers consist of 8 digits plus 2 dashes and follow the pattern 123-456-78. The dashes are significant.

Availability guarantee

We will deliver each product or a suitable replacement for it for at least 10 years if it hasn't been declared discontinued the last time you bought it.

Block

Block is a Kniel-specific mechanical housing variant for the 19”-system. Because of the weight of the 50Hz-transformer this housing is mainly used for linear regulated power supplies.

Bureau Veritas

Bureau Veritas  is an international operating company in testing, inspection and certification.

Burn-In

To detect early failure, before a power supply is tested for the last time prior leaving the factory, each unit has to go through a burn-in for 48 hours.

C

Calibration

Some of our products need to be calibrated to work according to specs. Calibration can degrade depending on workload and operating conditions. We offer calibration of our products as a service (subject to a charge).

CAN-Bus

CAN-Bus is a serial field bus system. It is the basis for the implementation of CANopen.

CANopen

Our digitally programmable power supplies (eg energy 1500, energy 1200 installation) are compatible with CANopen and have a suitable interface.

Cassette

Cassette is a Kniel-specific mechanical housing variant for the 19”-system. We have variants for 3HP and 6HP.

Decoupling diodes

When using power supplies in redundancy, decoupling diodes must be used to avoid one power supply to feed its power into the output of another power supply.

Yes, all power supplies from Kniel be used for redundancy operation. Shows the connector pin assignment one or more pins named +R, the necessary decoupling diode is already interegrated in the unit. If not, an external decoupling diode (available as additional accessory) must be used. Potentially existing PA-pins may not be connected. If the power supplies in question can operate in „Load Sharing“, this mode should be used. Not every power supply has this feature, please refer to the data sheet and description of the unit in question.

DemoApp2

Our digitally programmable power supplies can be operated remotely from a PC by means of a LabVIEW application. Each of these power supplies comes with a data carrier loaded with this application.

CAN-Bus is a broadcast, differential serial bus standard. Kniel utilizes the high-speed model according to ISO 11898-2. For data transmission on layer 1 and 2 of the CAN-Bus the protocol CANopen according to CiA Draft Standard 301 (EN 50325-4) is used.

Does the digital interface allow to control Kniel power supplies remotely? (1.5.4)

Yes, all control and monitoring functions realised in the power supply like limits, protections, status requests and so forth are accessible via the digital interface off-the-shelf.

How does one find out, which wall bracket goes with which 19”-unit? (3.2.2)

We offer matching wall brackets for most of our 19”-primary switchers and DC/DC-converters. Basically the wall bracket has to be mounted on the side of the unit that's next to the connector. An exception are our units either 8U or 12U wide, here the wall bracket has to be mounted on the side of the unit that is further from the connector. Wall brackets series WF (for wall mounting with screw fastening) or WFS (for DIN-rail mounting) are mounted on a flat side wall, wall brackets series WG (for wall mounting with screw fastening) or WGS (for DIN-rail mounting) are mounted upon a potentially existing side wall cooler. Please consider that power supplies can be ordered completely equipped with mounted wall brackets and mounting devices for DIN-rails. No wall brackets are available for our power supplies 4U wide. If you need power supplies in this power range, please consider our Modules. For some housings we offer special forms of wall brackets. Please contact us if you need information.

Can I order power supplies ready for mounting on walls or DINrails ex works or do I have to retrofit the wall bracket and/or rail mounts? How can I order this? (3.2.3)

Discontinued

We can pronounce a type discontinued. Usually this means, the product will still be available for purchase for a given time. For new projects the customer should go for the successor type.

Extern ON/OFF

Power supplies equipped with Extern ON/OFF can be switched off be applying an external voltage to an input (or on again if the voltage goes away). The exact function is explained in the description of the power supply.

Guide rails

Guide rails hold power supplies in a 19"-rack. Guide rails are directional dependant; the right rails must be mounted inverted.

No. In most cases it has been missed to rotate the right guiding rails by 180° before mounting them into the rack.

HP

HP is a dimension unit of the 19”-system and is used to indicate the height of a unit. One HP - front panel related - equals to 1.75” or 44.45mm.

U is one of the main dimension units of the 19”-system and is used to indicate the width of the unit. One U equals to one fifth of an inch or 5.08mm. HP is the second main dimension unit of the 19”-system and is used to indicate the height of a unit. One HP - front panel related - equals to 1.75” or 44.45mm. We offer powers supplies for 3U or 6U installation hight and with different installation widths within a wide range of output power.

Input voltage ranges

Depending on the topolpgy our power supplies are equipped with different ranges for the input voltage. DC/DC-converters have input voltage ranges between 18 Vdc and 300 Vdc:

  • 18 - 36 Vdc
  • 36 - 75 Vdc
  • 43 - 53 Vdc
  • 75 - 150 Vdc
  • 150 - 300 Vdc

Units with AC input are either designed for 115 Vac or 230 Vac or can accept both input voltages. Depending on series the units have a wide range input, automatic range selection or can be switched manually between the ranges. Units of the series energy 3000 need a 3-phase mains input (3x400 Vac).

installation

Part of the name of a series of power supplies especially designed for mounting on walls like electrical cabinets. Eg energy 400 installation, energy 1200 installation. Matching variants of our Modules are available, too. Units of other serieses can be retrofitted or adapted.

LabView VI

To make integration of our digitally programmable power supplies (energy..., energy ... installation) into your automated processes as easy as possible, we deliver not only the DemoApp with which you can control the power supply from a PC but als LabVIEW VIs ythat you can integrate into your own applications. DemoApp and LabVIEW VIs accompany the power supply on delivery.

Lantronix

For our power supplies with LAN interface we use an Ethernet module called XPort from Lantronix .
Two installers from Lantronix are required to enable your PC to connect via the LAN interface to the power supply. Please make sure your computer has the current version of Microsoft .NET Framework 4 installed, as both Lantronix applications require it.
The Device Installer is used to assign IP and other network specific addresses to the XPort module in your power supply. The Com Port Redirector maps the TCP/IP connection to the XPort in your power supply - configured with the device installer as stated above - onto a virtual COM port.

To enable you to check the integrety of the file you downloaded from us, we use MD5 checksums. The checksums are shown near the download link. We only create checksums for files that get wrapped in an ZIP archive. We do not calculate checksums for PDF files.

Mechanic shapes

Module (german: Modul)

A Kniel specific term for a mechanical shape of power supplies. Besides of ventilation openings a Module is completely enclosed. Depending on output power Modules come in different length while all have the same cross section. Modules are available for 19“ systems, for wall mounting and for DIN-rail mounting. Modules can come as switchers with AC or DC as input (lacquered RAL6026)

Over voltage protection (OVP) (german: Überspannungsschutz ÜSS)

Protects a power supply against voltages on the outputs that exceed a given limit.

Power Boost

Our power supplies deliver their rated power output up to 70°C ambient temperature. Up to 45°C ambient temperature many of our power supplies can deliver more, we call this Power Boost (PB). PQube is a modular system for monitoring the quality of a power grid and energy consumption.

How should a pre-fuse be dimensioned? (1.6.1)

The data sheets of our power supplies contain information about the integrated fuse and the inrush current. Following the principle of “selective coordination” (see this PDF) a pre-fuse must be dimensioned higher than the built-in fuse of any of the following power supplies. Additionally the pre-fuse needs to cover higher inrush currents than any of the following fuses (for the relevant data refer to the data sheet of each power supply). The worst-case values for the inrush current are valid for repowering the unit after a short interruption (≤ 1 minute). Due to the fact that in most applications repeated powering up can not be avoided, always the values for worst-case should be the base of dimensioning. Should you want to let multiple power supplies share the same pre-fuse, only an estimate can be made. After dimensioning the pre-fuse the calculation should be evaluated by tests. The maximum inrush current of the pre-fuse equals the sum of the combined inrush currents of all power supplies when cold (“unit cold”). For an assumed worst-case the pre-fuse must resist at least half of the combined inrush currents under worst-case conditions. Usually the integral value for suitable fuses is sufficient if fuses with the proper tripping characteristic (characteristic K or slow-blow) are used.

Primary switcher (german: Primärschaltregler)

Switched power supply with DC as input voltage, comes in different housing variants.

Programming

Many of our power supplies can be analog and/or digital programmed. Digital programming is done either directly on the unit, by using an external control unit (HMI) or from your PC via one of several interfaces (RS232, USB, CAN, LAN). In most cases analog programming is done using a programming voltage (typically 0-5V or 0-10V) or resitance (typically 0-10kΩ).
Additionally all of our regulted power supplies are adjustable. Meaning, the output voltage can be altered in a given range around the nominal output voltage using the potetiometers at the front panel. The range depends on the unit in question.

QPS

QPS is a service recognized as NRTL (Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory). Our qualified products carry the QPS certification mark.

Special characters

We use the special characters / and * on the identification label to indicate the input voltage of a power supply. If a power supply supports more then one input voltage or input voltage range, we separate them with a /. The default value set ex works is prefixed with a *.
Eg 115/*230 Vac marks a power supply with two nominal input voltages (115 Vac and 230 Vac) and was delivered set for 230 Vac.

Steckcompact

Steckcompact is a Kniel-specific mechanical housing variant for the 19”-system. The PCB and another part of the unit are inserted into the guide rails and hold the unit in place.

Sub racks

A term from the world of 19"-systems. If there is no need for a full size 19”-rack, a sub rack can be used to combine several 19”-units into a single housing. Sub rack are available in 3U and 6U and can be utilizes for table top operation. On request we design and manufacture sub racks equipped with our own power supplies and peripherals.

Power supplies with integrated cooling fans can be mounted in any position. But care must be taken to make sure the air intakes and outlets are free and not covered. Power supplies without integrated cooling fan must be mounted in a position to allow the surrounding air to develop a convection stream through the power supply in order to cool it. If this is not possible, measures must be taken to secure a consistent flow of air through the power supply (e.g. by external cooling fan).

How does one find out, which wall bracket goes with which 19”-unit? (3.2.2)

We offer matching wall brackets for most of our 19”-primary switchers and DC/DC-converters. Basically the wall bracket has to be mounted on the side of the unit that's next to the connector. An exception are our units either 8U or 12U wide, here the wall bracket has to be mounted on the side of the unit that is further from the connector. Wall brackets series WF (for wall mounting with screw fastening) or WFS (for DIN-rail mounting) are mounted on a flat side wall, wall brackets series WG (for wall mounting with screw fastening) or WGS (for DIN-rail mounting) are mounted upon a potentially existing side wall cooler. Please consider that power supplies can be ordered completely equipped with mounted wall brackets and mounting devices for DIN-rails. No wall brackets are available for our power supplies 4U wide. If you need power supplies in this power range, please consider our Modules. For some housings we offer special forms of wall brackets. Please contact us if you need information.

Can I order power supplies ready for mounting on walls or DINrails ex works or do I have to retrofit the wall bracket and/or rail mounts? How can I order this? (3.2.3)
